Singapore’s 2027 holiday calendar includes three Saturday dates and a Sunday Chinese New Year holiday, with Monday 8 February listed as a public holiday. For an employer, the key question is how each date interacts with the employee’s actual work pattern, leave balance and coverage plan.

Singapore public holidays 2027: the official dates

MOM lists eleven gazetted public holidays for 2027. The calendar below separates the two Chinese New Year dates and identifies the Monday observance in the caption. Keep the official announcement with your annual calendar record and recheck it before confirming staffing arrangements.

The table is a company planning starting point. It does not say every employee has the same working days or the same payment outcome. Add the relevant work pattern before using it to adjust attendance or leave records.

Saturday and Sunday are different payroll questions

Under MOM’s guidance for Employment Act-covered employees, a holiday on a non-working day can mean another day off or an extra day’s salary at the gross rate. A holiday on a rest day means the following working day is a paid holiday. In a typical five-day Monday–Friday arrangement, Saturday is non-working and Sunday is the rest day.

In 2027, the Saturday dates are 6 February, 1 May and 25 December. Do not silently discard them because the office is already closed. Equally, do not assume each one automatically becomes the following Monday for every employee.

The useful HR field is the person’s work pattern and designated rest day, effective for that period. If these differ across office and operational teams, the calendar needs a review by arrangement. A universal “Monday off” announcement can create a correction exercise later.

Long weekends: identify the assumption before promoting the dates

For someone who ordinarily works Monday to Friday, the calendar creates straightforward Friday/Monday opportunities around 1 January, 26 March, 17 May and 9 August. Chinese New Year needs additional care because the Saturday and Sunday dates raise different questions.

One useful May planning example combines the two published holidays in the same week. Assume Saturdays and Sundays are non-working, 17 and 20 May are observed holidays for the person, and annual leave on 18 and 19 May is approved. That produces six consecutive calendar days away, from 15 to 20 May, using two annual-leave days.

This is a scheduling calculation, not an entitlement to have those leave requests approved. For a small service team, the better conversation is how many people can be away together and what minimum cover remains. Publish the approval criteria before competing requests arrive.

If people work on the holiday, record the decision before payroll

MOM’s pay guidance distinguishes working-day, non-working-day and rest-day scenarios. For work on an ordinary working-day public holiday, the default includes an additional day’s basic pay, with the holiday’s gross pay already included in monthly salary. Alternatives and time off have conditions, so do not assume every employee can receive an identical informal swap.

Before the shift, record who is scheduled, which arrangement applies and who has approved the treatment. After the shift, reconcile actual hours and any changes. Payroll should not have to reconstruct the decision from a supervisor’s message at the end of the month.

This guide does not calculate every holiday-pay scenario. Use MOM’s detailed guidance and calculator for the actual coverage, work pattern, hours and pay components. When a case is unclear, resolve it before issuing the payslip rather than using a convenient flat amount.

Keep annual leave, observed holidays and replacement days distinct

A company calendar and a personal leave balance answer different questions. The calendar says what is scheduled to happen. The balance says what the person has been allocated and used. A replacement day or agreed alternative should have a traceable basis rather than appear as an unexplained manual adjustment.

Before approving a long absence, break the date range into workdays, holidays, ordinary days off and requested leave. Show the employee the deduction being approved. A request from Saturday to Thursday should not automatically deduct six annual-leave days simply because the date range contains six dates.

For a workbook, add a notes/reference field for an adjustment and keep the approved arrangement. In a connected system, test whether a manager can see the calculated deduction and whether the authorised reviewer can explain an override. The control should remain understandable after the person who entered it is unavailable.

A fair coverage plan for a small team

Identify the minimum cover required for critical tasks, not just a percentage of staff allowed off. Two people can be enough for one team and insufficient for another if only one person can authorise a payment or respond to an urgent customer issue.

Ask for requests early, use consistent approval criteria and document exceptions. If an employee cannot take the preferred dates, discuss alternatives promptly rather than leave the request indefinitely pending. Check the plan again when someone joins, leaves or changes shifts.

Avoid publishing personal leave reasons to explain a rota. Colleagues need to know availability and cover responsibilities. The underlying request and any sensitive supporting information belong in the appropriate restricted record.

  • Confirm the holiday dates against the official announcement.
  • Record the actual working pattern and rest day for each arrangement.
  • Decide the holiday treatment before changing leave balances.
  • Set minimum task coverage and a consistent approval process.
  • Check requested date ranges day by day before deducting annual leave.
  • Reconcile actual work, agreed alternatives and payroll at period end.

Test the calendar before importing a full year

Use three fictional cases: an ordinary weekday holiday, a Saturday holiday for a five-day office worker, and a holiday affecting a different roster. Check the displayed date, leave deduction, attendance status and the instruction passed to payroll.

If any result is unclear, correct the configuration or process before loading the full team. A visually attractive calendar does not prove the entitlement logic. Keep the test inputs and expected outcomes so the next annual update can be checked against the same scenarios.

YavaHR’s leave and attendance tours show the intended everyday workflow with fictional data. They do not determine statutory holiday pay. Our free tracker is an editable starting point; the employer still needs to verify the actual arrangement and calculations.

A few practical questions.

How many gazetted public holidays does Singapore have in 2027?

MOM’s announcement lists eleven. Monday 8 February is also listed as a public holiday following the Sunday Chinese New Year holiday; do not treat that observance as an extra twelfth entitlement.

Is every Saturday public holiday automatically moved to Monday?

No. Establish the employee’s non-working day and rest day, then apply the relevant rules or contract. Non-working-day and rest-day situations differ.

Can I get six days away using two annual-leave days in May?

Under the Monday–Friday assumptions in our example, approved leave on 18 and 19 May links the weekend with the 17 and 20 May holidays. Actual approval and work patterns still matter.

Does a public holiday calendar calculate holiday pay?

No. Dates alone cannot determine pay. Coverage, work pattern, hours, pay components and agreed arrangements must also be reviewed.
